In Upernavik’s old quarter you’ll find the world’s northernmost open-air museum.
The museum consists, among other things, of the old church, grocer’s shop and all the original colonial buildings.
The administrator’s residence tells the cultural history of the area and in the old shop you can see an old, but completely intact, kayak and an old umiaq boat.
When hunting for whale or walrus the umiaq was manned by men, but when travelling the boat was rowed by women, often with an older man at the helm.
