Kangerlussuaq has always been a key destination for tourism in Greenland, particularly as a gateway to the Ice Sheet. The reinstatement of the direct route from Copenhagen creates new opportunities to attract travelers and further develop tourism in the area. Additionally, Kangerlussuaq connects visitors to the rest of Greenland with domestic flights to Nuuk, Ilulissat, and Sisimiut from March to October, making it optimal to explore more of the country’s unique destinations.
Kangerlussuaq is a well-established tourist destination with extensive experience and significant potential as an adventure hub. One of its most unique features is that it is the only place in Greenland where visitors can drive directly to the Greenland Ice Sheet—an exceptional attraction that offers travelers a rare opportunity to witness the ice’s immense grandeur up close. This massive ice sheet, a remnant of the last Ice Age, captivates visitors with its raw power, vast expanses, and breathtaking silence.
Just a stone’s throw from Kangerlussuaq lies Greenland’s newest UNESCO site, Aasivissuit – Nipisat. Spanning a vast area from the Ice Sheet to the sea, this site has served as a hunting ground for Inuit communities for approximately 4,200 years.
Furthermore, the region continues to offer a wide range of well-established tourism operators and strong adventure experiences, including hiking, wildlife safaris, trophy hunting, and expeditions. These activities make Kangerlussuaq particularly attractive to adventure tourists.
In 2025, the range of experiences in Kangerlussuaq will expand even further with the introduction of a 100 km ATV route to Greenland’s adventure city, Sisimiut, providing visitors with new ways to explore the surrounding wilderness. This development will also contribute to the local community by creating new business opportunities.
With the new flight route and ongoing investments in the experience economy, Kangerlussuaq is strengthening its position as a key destination in Greenland’s tourism landscape.
