International Hotel Classification in Greenland

As of January 1st. 2016, hotels in Greenland will be a part of the joint European project, Hotel Stars Union.

 Published on July 16, 2019

The classification of hotels in Greenland will be a joint collaboration effort between the Greenland Business Association, Visit Greenland and HORESTA.

HORESTA classifies hotels in the Faroe Islands, and in Denmark as well. HORESTA classifies approximately 320 hotels in total.

When hotels are classified according to Hotel Stars Union, the classified hotels can be compared to similar hotels in 15 other countries, including Germany, Sweden and Switzerland. “It is an advantage for the hotels in terms of their marketing and daily business management” comments Christoffer Susse, Chief of Relations at HORESTA.

New Signs in the Hotels

In connection with the transition to Hotel Stars Union, the old classification signs will be changed, and replaced with new signs, based on a universal design for all countries involved.

Classification of Conference Facilities

The ranking of conference facilities is not affected by the change to Hotel Stars Union. The existing agreement continues as is, which means that the criteria and other conditions are unchanged.

Hotels classified using the number of stars system are marketed on www.visitgreenland.com and www.hotelstars.gl

On these sites, you will find the classified hotels which have been ranked, including additional information on what each hotel has to offer regarding service and amenities.

Hotel Stars Union

16,382 hotels have so far been classified in compliance with Hotel Stars Union standards involving 44 percent of the hotel market in the 15 countries that have joined, including important markets such as Sweden and Germany.

Objective criteria

“Hotel Stars Union is based on objective criteria. It is a strength because guests and tour operators will have a single point of reference across national borders. It makes it easier for tourists to gain information on the standard of the hotels before booking a hotel room in Greenland”.

Classification requires an annual inspection of all hotels to ensure that the quality is maintained to the prescribed criteria.

Hotel Stars Union uses the same rules and principles as the earlier classification system; thus, only minor adjustments are necessary by hotels to meet the standards required. Mounting an electrical power outlet, by the head of the bed in the rooms of three-star hotels and up, has now become mandatory.

A new feature introduces the distinction ‘Superior’, which is awarded to hotels that score points above their classification level, but who do not meet all the requirements to move a full level up.

In this way, Hotel Stars Union becomes an advantage to Greenland’s continued ability to attract tourists, as well as being an advantage for the hotels that have been classified.
