Nuuk, Greenland named to TIME’s Annual list of the World Greatest Places 2021

Press release Tuesday 20 July, 2021

Today, TIME reveals the third annual list of the World’s Greatest Places, which highlights 100 extraordinary travel destinations around the world – and Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, has made this famous list. It’s the Capital’s new coastal paths which drape along the stunning coastline together with the high possibility to see northern lights that has secured the Arctic capital a spot on the list.

In 2017, Visit Greenland invited journalist Lauren Breedlove to Nuuk, who recommended Greenland for this list. Since then she’s written for a number of influential media like POPSUGAR, TravelPulse/MSN og Celebrity Cruises where she shares her passion for Greenland.

“It is fantastic that Nuuk is a part of TIME’s list for 2021. It is an acknowledgement of the offerings Nuuk has as a sought after destination. Lists like this are important, because they help future travellers remember the destination when they are planning their next trip”, says Director of Visit Greenland, Hjörtur Smárason.

A sustainable capital

In 2020 The Municipality of Sermersooq, which Nuuk is a part of, announced their ambitious goal to make Nuuk the first certified sustainable capital in the world according to EarthCheck Destination Standard. This decision along with Nuuk’s low pollution levels has been recognised and applauded by TIME and helped secure Nuuk’s spot on the TIME 2021 list.

“We know that the environment and sustainability really matter to tourists – and it also affects our future. These are reasons why Nuuk is working towards being a sustainable capital. We are happy to see how our efforts in the world create a roll on effect, and that the initiatives in the area produce recognition and value, says Anne Nivika Grødem, Deputy Manager at Sermersooq Business.
