Update from South Greenland

The latest news and updates from Visit South Greenland

 Published on September 23, 2019

How was this summer season?

Local operators are generally pleased with the summer 2019 season, with 40% reporting that this season was better than the last! Some have noticed an increase in sales of souvenirs and artwork, while others have experienced a surprising number of walk-in guests looking for accommodation. There have also been a lot of new faces and developments around – South Greenland is definitely an exciting place for tourism!

What’s new with existing operators?

Siniffik Inn, Qaqortoq

  • Siniffik Inn has expanded its capacity, offering both budget rooms as well as private double rooms with private facilities.
  • The inn is locally-owned and operated by Heidi Mortensen Møller.

Blue Ice Explorer, Narsarsuaq

  • Jacky Simoud, the founder, owner and long-standing manager of Blue Ice Explorer, Narsarsuaq, is retiring at the end of this year. We thank Jacky for his contribution to the development and promotion of tourism in South Greenland.

KUJATAA, South Greenland UNESCO Office

  • The new Facebook page “Kujataa – World Heritage” uses fantastic photo albums, updates about field work and cooperative art projects to bring history to life.
  • There are new local UNESCO Visitor Centers in Qassiarsuk and Igaliku, and more on the way.

Qajaq Brewery, Narsaq

  • Qajaq Brewery has recently expanded its production facilities to increase distribution around the country and internationally.
  • You can try all of the brews with a tasting flight at Cafe Inugssuk.

Off-the-beaten-track trip suggestion

  • Stay at Seaside Whale Hotel in Alluitsup Paa and take excursions to the nearby hot springs and gold country, plus hike to Alluitsoq, a former town with deep German missionary roots, and the birthplace of the man who developed the written Greenlandic language.

Remember, we still have 8 farms in South Greenland that have hostels and guesthouses on site, making for the perfect multi-day hiking holiday in which every day ends with a warm bed.

Thanks to Kujalleq Municipality’s Tourism and Business Development Consultant, Sarah Woodall, for the update!

The Journey

Greenland is embarking on a journey, somewhat forced by the rapid changes in the climate, somewhat voluntarily in the way we choose to adapt. We are inviting the upcoming leaders in sustainable tourism to join us. To come with us on this journey through time – and to a place like no other.
