Film tourism is a global trend where locations featured in films experience increased attention and more visitors. Films generate interest in the locations people see on screen. In the long term, film tourism can strengthen the flow of tourists to specific places. Examples from other countries show that films are a long-term investment in visibility, which can contribute to growth in the tourism sector.
Additionally, film productions can contribute to the local economy through spending on accommodation, transport, and services, as well as create jobs during the production phase. The collaboration between Visit Greenland and Film.gl aims to utilize this potential to benefit Greenland.
“Film is a powerful catalyst for putting Greenland on the global map. This partnership aims to drive economic growth but also empower the local film industry, showcasing Greenland’s unique stories to the world.”, says Anne Nivika Grødem, CEO of Visit Greenland.
The cooperation, which initially runs until the end of 2025, includes financial support from Visit Greenland. The support is intended to back a series of targeted initiatives. The funds will be used to ensure participation in international film festivals and markets, while simultaneously promoting Greenland as an attractive location for film production. Additionally, the support will enable Greenlandic filmmakers to participate in international networks and promote film projects that convey Greenland’s culture and nature.
The distribution of the funds will be managed by the board of Film.gl, which is responsible for ensuring that the support is allocated to projects with significant international potential. To ensure Greenland’s representation, it is required that the projects collaborate with at least one Greenlandic partner. This cooperation aims to strengthen Greenland’s global profile and support the development of the local film industry.
– With this agreement, which Film.gl is very pleased with, we have the opportunity to highlight Greenland’s potential in the international film industry while also strengthening our local filmmakers’ access to new networks and collaborative opportunities,” states Klaus Georg Hansen, chairman of the board for Film.gl.
