One cannot say 2019 without mentioning sustainability – just as it has been relevant internationally, it is also increasingly relevant for Greenlandic tourism. With a steady increase in international visitor hotel occupancy, international airline and cruise passengers, as well as three new airports on the way – it’s more important than ever to look after nature, culture and society as a whole.
Precisely this focus on sustainability is paramount when Visit Greenland in 2020 presents its new strategy for 2020-2023 with links to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The strategy’s goals are clear – to develop Greenland’s tourism for long-term economic growth with consideration for nature, rooted in culture and with world-class experiences, because tourism must contribute to the positive development of our society – both for tourists and locals.
When the strategy is finalised, you can read much more about how we are working to get there and what our success criteria are. It will be published here, so please keep an eye out for future newsletters.
However, one thing is certain – we can only succeed if we all contribute to a joint effort for tourism development with a focus on sustainability. The entire Visit Greenland team is looking forward to meeting you in the new year and continuing our excellent collaboration.
