- The government of Greenland decided that two executive orders on the protection of polar bears must be amended before polar bear safaris can become legal before the end of 2020. Skilled tourist operators will be able to offer polar bear safaris in the near future.

- Sermersooq Business held its first international webinar in English, ‘Sustainable tourism destination certification of Nuuk’ on the 15 of May.

- Air Greenland has now changed its ticket conditions for flights from 22 May until the 31 August. To read more please go to the Air Greenland website.
- This year the Arctic Guide students from Campus Kujalleq had the opportunity to take AECO’s Field Staff Online Assessment test that demonstrates knowledge of the rules and regulations that govern Arctic field operators in Greenland. Earlier graduates will also have this opportunity to pass this test in the future.

- The Icelandic airline Icelandair has decided to integrate Air Iceland Connect‘s operations, which so far has been for domestic and regional flights to Greenland. All functions in Air Icelandair Connect such as sales, marketing, operations, finance, HR and IT will be included under Icelandair. Pilots and cabin crew will be employed under the current conditions.
- Sarfaq Ittuk starts its season 1 May out of Nuuk. They will also service Disko Bay and Qeqertarsuaq earlier. Prices are also updated.
- New board members in Visit Greenland
- Staycation – the term for during your vacation in your own city or country – is one of the recovery strategies of tourism in Greenland. Therefore Visit Greenland recommends that local businesses develop products and marketing to match the needs of the locals. Simultaneously, we encourage locals to explore Greenland in 2020 and support local businesses. Stay tuned, Visit Greenland will hold a webinar about a coordinated effort in the near future.
- Arctic Dream has begun cooperating with a manufacturer in Poland that builds Alu boats, so it is now possible to build tourist boats at a good price. A standard boat costs 350,000DKK + shipping. You may contact Lars Anker at info@arcticdream for specifications and he can make a quote for you.

- Coronavirus status: We have a B2C status article in English, Danish and German. We have a B2B status article aimed specifically at the local industry, in Danish and Greenlandic. Keep an eye on these pages to stay up to date with how the pandemic is affecting Greenland.
- Both Air Greenland and Air Iceland Connect are allowing customers and agents to rebook their flights up to the end of April 2021, in light of the travel disruptions caused by the coronavirus outbreak. See their websites for more details.
- New Web Editor at Visit Greenland: Insuk Kim. Insuk has previously been a Student Helper at Visit Greenland. She has already worked a lot with marketing Greenland, including authoring the first ever book about Greenland to be published in South Korea.
- Visit Greenland says goodbye to our previous Web Editor, Anna Maria Jakobsen. Anna has been with us for a year and a half, and as well as taking on the Web Editor position she has been covering the position of Social Media Manager while Arina Kleist has been on maternity leave. Anna moves on to a position as Social Media Manager for Egmont media group.
- New student helper: Johanna Himstedt joins us as a part-time student helper in the Copenhagen office. Johanna will help primarily with web tasks.
- Liz Cooper, who has been covering Tanny Por on Visit Greenland’s content, press and B2B teams for the last year, will begin an industrial PhD with Visit Greenland/Copenhagen Business School on 1st April. The project aims to find strategies for encouraging sustainable behaviour among cruise tourists in Greenland. Liz retains the same contact details at Visit Greenland.

- Sarfalik is relaunched as a wine bar and brasserie on the 24th of November. There would be a large selection of wines and a menu inspired by France and Italy with lots of local produce provided by the local hunters. The new menu is available on Facebook – Link
- Nuuk Water Taxi joined forces with the company IceCap Gems to offer excursions focusing on the geology of the islands of Qilanngaarsuk and Akilia, where you can find the gemstone Greenlandite and some of the world’s oldest sedimentary rocks. Link

Nuuk Adventure’s puffin safari has been having success with regular puffin sightings around Nuuk. - Colourful Nuuk’s first sustainable tourism workshop will be held on 28th November at Hotel Hans Egede, from 08:30 to 16:00. The workshop will be led by Daniel Frey from Green Growth.
- Colourful Nuuk are in the process of marking out the route up to the top of Store Malene. It is planned to be finished before the end of the year.

- New operator in Nuuk: Qajaq Seaway – boat charter company.
- Nuuk Water Taxi has moved its office to Hotel Hans Egede for the winter! On weekdays, they will have a pop-up office at the hotel reception.

- Plans are under way for the building of a permanent sauna and two changing huts for winter bathers in Nuuk.

- Business seminar in Qaanaaq, where the tourism consultants from Avannaata were. Among other things, talked about Covid-19, new Atlantic airports, prices of dog sledding trips and the expansion of offers for tourists in the area.

- Greenland Cruises invests in a brand new Targa 37 – a boat that can carry 12 passengers on tours in Ilulissat in summer and Nuuk during the winter.

- Due to greater demand for comfort huts at Glacier Lodge Eqi, World of Greenland is transforming 4 of the standard huts into comfort huts. The new comfort huts are already for sale on the website.
- For the slightly more adventurous, there are now 6 Wilderness Tents at Glacier Lodge Eqi. The tents have a high level of comfort.
- Helicopter tours are now available for booking on World of Greenland’s website.
- The cabin at Igloo Lodge has been expanded so that there is now a twin room per igloo for the really cold nights. There is also a brand new tour leaving from Igloo Lodge every day.

- World of Greenland has expanded Igloo lodge to four times its current capacity, allowing up to 12 guests to overnight there. 6 bedrooms that allow 2 guests each have been built for guests who would prefer to sleep in private quarters. Guests can also gather in a big living room with panorama windows, a gas fireplace, and rustic furniture. This cabin will also be used during the summertime in a combined helicopter, canoe and hiking tour.
- World of Greenland has also bought a brand new 30 m² dome. They hope to place this near the Icefiord so it can be used in summertime as well – maybe as a yoga studio. This winter it will be used for their Inuit Legends tour and Northern Lights Safari. The dome will also be heated with a gas fireplace, rustic furniture and skins.
- World of Greenland has a new corporation with the Ilulissat Women’s Association – read about it here.
- As of the 1st January, the Seaman’s Home has taken over Hotel Avannaa in Ilulissat. Ilulissat Seaman’s Home is due to open on 20th January.

- Sermitsiaq, in collaboration with RealDania, will publish a nationwide newspaper about the upcoming Icefjord Centre in Ilulissat. The newspaper will be published on the 6th and 8th November and will be available online as a PDF at sermitsiaq.ag.

- From January 2020, tourists will be able to rent cross-country skis from Greenland Fiord Tours.
September 2019
- Uummannaq Fjord Tours has changed its name to Greenland Fiord Tours By Land and Sea. They have also created a subsidiary company called North Greenland Cruise Services, which offers harbour services, boat tours, helicopter tours and shore excursions for cruise ships.
- New operator – Ilulissat Unique Tours. Offering snowmobile excursions in the Ilulissat area using local guides.
- In May 2021, Best Western hotels will open the Best Western Plus in Ilulissat. This sustainable hotel will have 78 rooms, a restaurant and a large roof terrace, and is being built and operated by a group of local investors.
- New product from North Greenland Adventure: Icecap View, Ilulissat. This is a restaurant with seating for 35 guests and accommodation for 20 people, situated close to the icefjord. It is open between November and April and reached by walking, cross country skiing, dog sledding, helicopter, or snow mobile.
- Albatros Travel’s renovation of Hotel Hvide Falk, Ilulissat, will begin in November. This huge renovation project will extend over a period of a few years.
- Greenland will get it’s fourth Seaman’s Home Hotel as Hotel Avannaa in Ilulissat becomes a part of the franchise. From the beginning of 2020, the hotel will be known as Ilulissat Seamen’s Home.
- Arctic Living Ilulissat is the name of a brand new sled dog centre in Ilulissat. Housing 32 dogs, tourists can visit to see presentations about dogsledding, visit the dogs and see them being fed. In the winter, the centre will also offer dogsled tours. It is planned that the centre will open soon.
- Hotel Nordlys are developing a new product: a sky hut with a great view in Oqaatsut. Contact Ole Dorph to learn more.
- North Greenland Adventure have built a hut by Sikujuitsoq and offers ice fishing tours. Contact Piitaq Magnussen to learn more.

- Qeqertarlik Kommune has established Qeqertalik Business Council and have also appointed key figures to be members of the council. Future tourism work will be undertaken in this council. More information in Danish here

- Disko Bay Tours has launched its new website.
- Lola Christensen, Tourism Coordinator for Qasigiannguit, had success last month when she held a presentation on dog sledding for tourists. There were 30 attendees.

- Siku Aput Dog Sledding & Snowmobiling has been featured in the new National Geographic book, Ultimate Journeys for Two. The authors, Mike & Anne Howard, chose Siku Aput as the best tour company in Western Greenland. The book has been released in bookstores worldwide.
November 2019
- Since its change of ownership in 2018, Hotel Disko Island has thoroughly renovated its restaurant, kitchen, reception and bar. The Hotel re-opened in July 2019 with new interior design, brand new chefs offering a new menu, as well as new panoramic windows which enhance the hotel’s amazing view. During the high season Hotel Disko Island arranges guided city walks in Qeqertarsuaq as well as walks to Kuannit.

- In mid-March, there was a consultation deadline on the EIA report on the road between Kangerlussuaq and Kangerluarsuk Tulleq, which is the first stage of two on the planned road. Qeqqata Kommunia plans to start the road construction this summer.

- The Arctic Circle Road has been a dream for more than 25 years. There are endless opportunities and the dirt road will make our big backcountry more accessible for locals and tourists. The groundbreaking road will connect two places in Greenland, from Kangerluarsuk Tulleq to Sisimiut. For more info: ACR website
- Destination Arctic Circle is still working on developing the Arctic Circle Trail, to make more routes and to ensure that you can be in complete solitude and just enjoy nature. We added the southern route last summer and we have plans to ensure remoteness on the trail.

- Louise Lynge Berthelsen, formerly of Nuuk Couture, will be the new director for Arctic Circle Business.
- The Arctic Hiking Festival has announced its dates: 21st – 26th July 2020. The festival focuses on creating activities, experiences and new friendships while protecting the beautiful arctic nature. Learn more about the festival here.

- Sisimiut Kayak Center are proud to introduce 3 new tours:
- The Traditional Qajaq tour: this Tour is open to everyone, even young children. The traditional qajaqs are designed to be very stable. For young children they place a flotation system which makes it impossible to capsize. This can also be used for adults. The qajaq will be equipped with a harpoon and avataq, so guests can try to throw the harpoon.
- 2 day dogsled and kayak trip: an immersion in an Inuit hunter’s life.
- Greenland Roll Camp, August 6th – August 9th: with Emanoraaq Nathansen, several time Greenlandic champion of the roll competition. SKC can also organise a Greenland roll demonstration for cruise ships.

- Arctic Circle Business has named Susanne Høegh as its new acting director. Applications for the director’s position closed on November 11th.
South Greenland

- In Summer 2021, the herders from Isortoq Reindeer Station will open a Reindeer Reserve in Qaqortoq’s backcountry where adventurers can experience these beautiful animals and learn about the history of reindeer herding in South Greenland.

- Quark expeditions has introduced a new expedition program in Greenland
- South Greenland has been busy hosting a handful of press trips this month to showcase gastronomy, glamping and Norse history from the UK and Denmark.
- Hotel Narsarsuaq has been experimenting with a medley of fresh, local ingredients and foraged garnishes. Savouring every bite on their new Tasting Menu is a must-do!
- Greenland Visitor Center spent a week travelling to South Greenland’s national highlights and four key sites together with local stakeholders and a team of international experts. Look forward to paved routes, information centers, guide service and more in the years to come.
- The sheep farmers who have welcomed adventurers and guests all summer are now in the time of the year known as “Sheep Gathering” – where they herd the sheep by foot to the farms!

- South Greenland is a running hotspot! This summer we have three marathons, organised by private associations. Qaqortoq Marathon takes place on 27 June; Tasermijit Marathon takes place on 18 July in Tasiusaq; and Leif Eriksson Marathon takes place on 22 August in Qassiarsuk.
- You can find Tourist Information in four places this summer – Narsarsuaq (in the airport and in Blue Ice Café next door), Narsaq (at Hotel Narsaq), Qaqortoq (at Greenland Sagalands boutique near the harbour) and Nanortalik (at Nanortalik Tourism Service near the church).
- New café on the way in Qaqortoq! Kûnguak Café & Ice Cream Bar will soon serve up Greenland’s best caffe latte, tea, hot cocoa and delicious ice cream and frozen yoghurt from a leading dairy – all with a view to the river and fjord!
- The popular skin care & wellness boutique Inua Care has moved to a bigger and more central location right by the fountain in town center.

- This summer you will find Site Guides in both Qassiarsuk and Igaliku. These two settlements are not only part of Kujataa, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, but they were also chosen as national points of interest by Greenland Visitor Center. They will maintain the precious Norse ruins and reconstructions as well as lead tours for any visitors.
- You can expect a smooth landing at Qassiarsuk, Itilleq (near Igaliku) and Upernaviarsuk this summer! New floating docks are being created as we speak with installation expected in early June.
- South Greenland is looking forward to hosting a string of events this summer, COVID-19 compliment, of course!
– Summer Solstice Festival (Ullortunersiorneq) will be the entire week leading up to National Day, 21 June, in Qaqortoq. Nanortalik and Narsaq hold Culture Week at the same time.

- New restaurant in Qaqortoq: NiNu Arctic Kitchen. Tasting menu from award-winning chef and owner Inunnguaq Hegelund and live music on the weekends.
- Site Guides: In summer 2020 there will be local Site Guides in Qassiarsuk and Igaliku. They will lead tours based on local knowledge and tell about local culture and history.
- New UNESCO exhibit at Qaqortoq Museum: 25 drawings by Greenlandic artist Konrad Nuka Godtfredsen. The drawings help to visualise how present-day ruin sites looked during the Viking period up to 1000 years ago.
- New multi-day excursion with Greenland Sagalands – “Kujammut”: Experience Uunartoq Fjord in several different ways for three days. Includes a relaxing dip in the Uunartoq hot springs, a visit to Alluitsoq, a German missionary from the 19th century, and a tent camp on a small scale mining area.
- MICE possibilities developing: 3 large international events on the way in Summer 2020. Visit South Greenland is on the planning committee of two of them as Event Planner consultant.
- Greenland Air Trophy, June: Narsarsuaq will be filled with small airplanes from around the world that will use the runway at Narsarsuaq International Airport for various flying competitions such as Shortest Landing. An international association called Air Trophy, which has members from many countries, hosts this event.
- North Atlantic Native Sheep & Wool Conference, July: Hotel Narsarsuaq is the venue for this 10 year anniversary event that focuses on the development of wool production in North Atlantic countries. The Agricultural Consulting Services of Greenland is the host.
- Greenland Exploration and Mining conference, August: Hotel Qaqortoq will be the venue for this conference that aims to increase knowledge about local mining possibilities for both academic and local markets. The Government of Greenland and the municipality of South Greenland are co-hosts.
- Around 35 people took part in South Greenland’s strategy workshop in late February.
February
- New adventure experience in UNESCO site: the lakeside Qanisartuut Farm and hostel offers hiking and kayaking opportunities, as well as local guiding and cultural experiences at the on-site UNESCO Information Center, and with kaffemik and storytelling in the farm owners’ home.
- New accommodation coming in Narsarsuaq: A new hostel with space for up to 10 guests is on its way in Narsarsuaq. More information in the coming months.
- Trade activities: In the 1st quarter, Visit South Greenland particioated in the Greenlandic Government’s Trade Mission to Berlin and Paris, Mid-atlantic in Reykjavik and 5 Countries Workshop in London.
- Strategy Workshop: The tourism development strategy for Kommune Kujalleq will be updated with contributions from all local operators in the region. A strategy workshop will be held on 18th and 19th February in Qaqortoq.
- Instructor Course from Campus Kujalleq: The first course takes place in Ilulissat from 1st – 5th February. This is a mini course that aims to qualify key people within the tourism industry as instructors, so that they can involve and educate extra workers during the high season when they are needed the most.
November 2019
- Inunnguaq Hegelund is back for good in South Greenland, opening a new permanent restaurant in Qaqortoq. It is planned that the restaurant will open in January on the site of the former restaurant Lallaatis.
October 2019
- Innovation South Greenland A / S (the business development company in South Greenland) is officially up and running! Director Allan Chemnitz started on October 1st. Innovation South Greenland is responsible for the development of the region in business, tourism and hunting / fishing. Sarah Woodall continues as Tourism Destination Manager at Innovation South Greenland.
- Hotel Narsarsuaq are freshening up the hotel and the restaurant menu and will be serving even better food in future
September 2019
- Jacky Simoud, the founder, owner and long-standing manager of Blue Ice Explorer, Narsarsuaq, is retiring at the end of this year. We thank Jacky for his contribution to the development and promotion of tourism in South Greenland..
- Yggdrasil Theme Park – The Legendary World of Norse Mythology: In September/October, Norse Theme Parks in partnership with Trida Media will launch an ambitious initiative to help boost tourism and awareness of the period when Norsemen settled southern Greenland.
- Chef Inunnguaq Hegelund is back for a limited time only, cooking at Lal’laati’s Pop Up in Qaqortoq, from 16th September until 2nd October.
