Isikkivik is a cosy little accommodation with fantastic views of icebergs and the sea high on the hillsides of Narsaq in South Greenland.
We call this cozy little house in Narsaq, Greenland ‘Isikkivik’ – the Greenlandic word for ‘what a view!’ – and when you see it, you’ll understand why. Most guests spend their first few hours here just gazing out the window at the huge icebergs in the fjord, the fishing boats in the harbor, the mountains, and the huge expanse of the ice cap, shimmering in the distance. You are about to fall in love with a warm place in a cool country.
Step onto the terrace to admire the view. Take a deep breath of that pure arctic air. Feel a lot warmer than you expected? Time to put on the sunglasses, strip down to a t-shirt, and soak up some summer sun. Or jump into our outdoor bathtub that is heated by a build in wood burning stove.
Our house is located on the eastern edge of Narsaq, at the foot of the Savaasat Qaqqaat (Greenlandic for ‘Goat’s Mountain’). It’s a blue cottage with a picture window and a large wooden deck facing south that provides a full view of the fjord, the entire town, nearby islands, and the ice cap.
Isikkivik has 27 sq. m. of living space (290 sq. ft.), including a living room in the front with a dining table, a comfy fold-out sofa, well-stocked multi-lingual bookshelves, and plenty of drawer and storage space.
There are chairs and a table for the front deck, and a tiny bedroom at the back. You can cook full-course meals in the well-furnished kitchen. The house has hot & cold running water during the summer. Isikkivik is an ideal nest for two people.
Many Greenlanders live in small wooden houses, often without running water, central heating or flush toilets. Isikkivik has a chemical toilet that is emptied three times a week. There is no shower. A modern electric heater keeps the place nice and cozy on cold days.
