Visit Greenland, the leading authority on tourism in Greenland, is pleased to announce its nomination for the esteemed Deauville Green Awards in the category of “Eco-tourism and Responsible Travel – Responsible tourism on land and water, urban and rural.” The Deauville Green Awards is an international festival of film production that celebrates social responsibility and ecology.
Visit Greenland created the video, “Date a destination: Greenland as six personalities” in order to celebrate and honour the diversity of the country, considering both unique aspects in the local communities and environment which is an important aspect of sustainability. Its target audience was delegates of Vestnorden 2022, the travel trade show for Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Visit Greenland has won recognitions twice before in 2017 and 2021.
Anne Nivika Grødem, CEO of Visit Greenland says,
“As a finalist once again, Visit Greenland is honoured to be recognised for its efforts in promoting sustainable tourism. It should be noted that life is different in the Arctic, therefore the concept of sustainability needs to be reframed when thinking in Greenland.”
Conventional considerations of how to provide sustainable tourism in Greenland must be turned upside down sometimes. For example, most of Greenland is not connected by roads, so it is impossible to drive or take trains to get from place to place. Meat was the main accessible resource for thousands of years, although it is possible to grow vegetables in South Greenland and in greenhouses.
Grødem continues,
“Sustainable tourism in Greenland takes into consideration these factors while also ensuring the wellbeing of the local communities. A good place to live is a good place to visit.”
The festival has received 500 film submissions from around 35 different countries, competing in 3 competitions in 15 categories. The goal of this esteemed festival, now in its twelfth year, is to showcase the finest “green” films worldwide, highlighting the significance of sustainability and climate change.
This is not the first time Visit Greenland has received recognition at the festival. In 2017, they clinched the gold award in the “Ecotourism and Responsible Travel” category for their documentary “Explorers by Nature: Life of Sheep Farmers,” showcasing the beauty and lifestyle of South Greenland. In 2021, Visit Greenland won silver for its film “Future of travel in Greenland: flattening the curve of the coronavirus”. The film featured Greenland’s staycation campaign, winning silver in the category “Beyond COVID”.
This year’s 12th edition of the festival will take place on June 7th and 8th, 2023 and will be joined by professionals from ADEME, BBC, Canal +, FranceTV, ONU, Orange, SNCF, Véolia, WWF, ZDF, and UNESCO. Visit Greenland will be participating in the film festival and represented by Visual Production Manager Aningaaq Pele Rosing.
