Sermilik Adventures wins Greenland Tourism Award 2022

Tobias Ignatiussen and Line Kristiansen from Sermilik Adventures in Tasiilaq are this year’s recipients of the Greenland Tourism Award.

Press release 19 September 2022

Sermilik Adventures from Tasiilaq are the winners of this year’s tourism award, which is presented in a collaboration between Visit Greenland and Air Greenland. The winners were revealed at an event for Greenlandic tour operators ahead of Vestnorden travel trade show, which is being held from 19 – 22 September 2022 in Nuuk, Greenland.

Sermilik Adventures received a trophy produced by Kim Kleist Eriksen and an Air Greenland travel gift voucher worth DKK 10,000.

About Sermilik Adventures

Sermilik Adventures was founded in Tasiilaq in 2019 by Arctic hunter Tobias Ignatiussen and nurse Line Kristiansen. The business partners offer multi-day package tours at Sermilik Fjord during both the summer and winter season. The package tours include the option of spending the night in their huts in Tiniteqilaaq, dogsled tours on the Ice Sheet, kayaking and a whale safari. In addition, they have serviced expedition cruises, which have made a tremendous contribution to Tasiilaq’s local economy.

Sustainability

Sermilik Adventures has managed to make a difference to the local community in its work in the tourism sector. Among other things, the company has taken young people on trips in order to give them an insight into the tourist industry, whilst also focusing on involving representatives of local culture – including choirs, drum dancing and handicraft artists – in their efforts to give tourists authentic experiences when travelling to Greenland.

Furthermore, Sermilik Adventures has been involved in a collaboration with an international cruise shipping line which uses a hybrid icebreaker to break the ice in the early part of the summer season, such that the supply ship and other operators can begin the season earlier than would normally be possible.

The other nominees

The purpose of Greenland Tourism Award is to reward and highlight tourism companies that create sustainable products with focus on safety, quality, environment, innovation and social responsibility. The respective destination managers from all regions of Greenland have sent their nominations to a panel of judges made up of representatives from Visit Greenland, Air Greenland and Innovation Greenland. The nominees for this year’s tourism award were:

  • Arctic Living Ilulissat
  • Dogsledge Taxi from Sisimiut
  • Hotel Søma Aasiaat
  • Qooqqut Nuan from Nuuk and
  • Riding Greenland from Qassiarsuk.

Statement by the panel of judges:

– We are extremely impressed by the responsibility shown by the nominated companies with regard to the environment and local community, and, not least, the quality and level of innovation they exhibit. These types of initiatives make up the foundation of sustainable tourism development in Greenland, which is something that is very much needed today and will continue to be so in the future! It is thereby with great pleasure that we can celebrate all the nominees – and Sermilik Adventures, in particular,” according to a statement by the panel of judges.

Visit Greenland wants to highlight the challenges and potentials in cruise tourism

This summer, there has been much debate about cruise tourism in Greenland. Some believe that too many ships are calling with too few regulations, while others believe that capacity has not yet been reached.
