To enhance the benefits to both the tourism industry and local citizens when cruise ships call at port, Visit Greenland is launching an optimized digital “Cruise Call” list ahead of the forthcoming tourist season.
This upgrade of the digital platform is a direct result of input from the industry itself. In May 2023, tourism operators, public authorities, and local stakeholders participated in a survey carried out by Visit Greenland. The survey aimed to analyze the cruise sector in Greenland. Cruise Forum 2024 was also held recently, in which plenty of cross-sectoral dialogue took place. Based on these events and surveys, Visit Greenland has gained valuable insights that have provided the basis for several strategic priorities:
“Visit Greenland’s core task is to ensure that the tourism industry and local communities enjoy the best conditions to enable them to reap the full benefits of developments in tourism. This updated platform is a step on the road to better tourism, such that everyone – from small businesses to individual citizens – can take advantage of the opportunities that arise in the wake of cruise ship tourism,” says Helene Lyberth Steffensen, Head of Content and Development at Visit Greenland.
A key focus for Visit Greenland is contributing to better coordination of the cruise ships calling at the country’s ports. This automated and upgraded version of the Cruise Call list aims to optimize the planning process and maximize the benefits of the many cruises that visit Greenland. This means that businesses and local citizens should find it easier to be prepared, thus ensuring that guests and hosts alike can enjoy the best possible experience.
The updated digital Cruise Call list has been drawn up in a valuable collaboration with the local port agents that are in contact with international shipping companies.
In parallel with this initiative, Visit Greenland is touring the country with the Minister of Business, Trade, Mineral Resources, Justice, and Gender Equality in a bid to promote collaboration on new tourism legislation. This legislation aims to improve the regulation and coordination of cruise ships calling at port and incorporate input for sustainable practices in tourism, as well as a plan for the sector in 2025-2035. The objective is to support sustainable tourism development that benefits local communities, protects Greenland’s culture and wilderness, and
ensures responsible growth in the tourism sector.
